To redact means ‘to edit.’ It’s what we teach you to do to your own writing: edit it effectively, transform it into commercially viable prose, whether fictional or non-fictional, whether imaginative or expository, at The Wording School.

Redactor is a residential editing seminar featuring one-on-one editing instruction performed on your own manuscript.

Our class sizes are small: never more than five students with most classes being one student and one editor/teacher.

You have to submit at least 25 pages or more of a written project like a novel or a non-fiction book, perhaps an exposé of the tar sands. We judge if you are ready for true copy editing. If The Wording School deems you ready for our course, you're in!

For the majority of lessons, you sit privately with a writing instructor and work on your own manuscript at your own pace. Individual instruction is followed by short classroom projects featuring reviews, drills and practice in weak areas discovered in one-on-one sessions. Read our schedule to see how the Redactor course and its various lengths of half-a-day, one day, and five-days, operate to improve your writing.

Two Other Options

at The Wording School

option # 1

Home Teaching One-on-One

Yes, we’ll come to your home and give you copy-editing lessons!

In some cases, one of our editors may travel to your home and offer one-on-one editing and style lessons. The minimum offered in a writer’s home is a 4-hour session. The tuition fees are listed below. Just scroll down to the blue box. The student must reimburse the editor for travel expenses, chiefly mileage fees and any necessary overnight accommodation.

option # 2

OUR EDITORS DO IT ALL!

Yes, we’ll edit and prepare your entire manuscript for presentation to an agent or a publisher.

Maybe the whole idea of learning to edit is anathema to you?

Perhaps you wish solely to compose, to write unfettered, and to let others edit your copy?

Bill Casselman and other editors at The Wording School can be contracted to fully edit your manuscript, your novel, your exposé of the tar sands?

Perhaps after studying with us through an in-person, one-on-one editing course, you will wish to hire us to complete the total editing and manuscript preparation of your book, having seen the editorial prowess and talent brought to bear on your own work?

Simply contact us with your manuscript’s length (number of words), its current state (completed? just begun? halfway through?). Send us a 25-page sample by email. If The School of Wording thinks one of our instructors can copy-edit and structurally improve what you have written and prepare it successfully for presentation to a publisher or a literary agent, we’ll send you our rates or negotiate rates with you on an individual basis for editing your entire book manuscript.

WARNINGS !

Writing School Scams & Cheats

being a Few Corrective Words about

Alternate Editing Courses

& Their Deceptive Ads

SCAM # 1

Maybe you think you’ll get better teaching and attention in a university writing class? Good luck, pal!

Do check out those withered groves of Academe very carefully.

Most Canadian universities have BANNED small classes, due to hard times on college row, due to budgetary restraints.

Remember when colleges encouraged and bragged about small classes? Now, in the current financial panic, universities ban tiny classes.

In the average university writing class, you will get almost NO one-on-one teaching with the instructor.

Does a university lecturer in a giant, stadium-seating college classroom setting have time to edit with you by yourself? Will you get private editing instruction on your complex 1o0,000-word manuscript? Are you dreaming? Of course not.

What a nightmare! Individual Instruction here? Impossible!

There is only one place a budding writer will get individual editing assistance and instruction hour after hour: The Wording School.

We have banned large classes!

None of our classes has more than five students.

Most classes comprise one student and one editor/teacher.

Think about fighting crowds of other students for attention and teacher-time in a huge university lecture hall; think about it before you fritter away hard-earned money on a university’s bloated writing-course tuition.

SCAM #2 Unbelievable Online Claims

How about some of the online writing-school con artists who promise that you will “write your book in one weekend”?

Wow! That’ll be some masterpiece.

Let’s see, J.K Rowling took several years to write her first Harry Potter book. But, never mind, say the online cheaters, you’ll be able to write your full-length novel in one weekend. Double wow!

Or is this preposterous claim just a cheap inducement to bilk you? Surely you are not that naïve? Nobody can write a novel over a weekend. If an online writing school promises the impossible, guess what? It's probably not possible.
